Since 2014, with the full implementation of "Obamacare", the landscape of individual Health Insurance has changed drastically. With the Affordable Care Act, health insurance carriers are required to provide "Essential Health Benefits" to their policyholders prior to the deductible being met. Some of these Essential Health Benefits include, but are not limited to - yearly physicals, well-child visits for children under the age of 18, testing for some diseases based on family history and risk and many more! The Affordable Care Act also prohibited the health insurance companies from excluding individuals with health history or pre-existing conditions from coverage.
Now, regardless of an individuals health, they can get health insurance if they apply during certain times of the year. The enrollment periods for individual health insurance are either during Open Enrollment (November 1 - December 15) for coverage that begins January 1st of the following year. Another way to enroll is with a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event (birth or adoption of child, loss of employer coverage, change in family situation, etc.)
